Topographic survey 220 kV route: Route adjustment for the Alpha – Chopon-Ota project

In an era of dynamic renewable energy development and rapid modernization of regional power transmission corridors, reliable spatial data plays a pivotal role. A professional topographic survey 220 kV route serves as an indispensable foundation ensuring engineering precision, installation safety, and trouble-free performance of high-voltage overhead lines. GEO PRO, a premier provider of certified engineering and geodetic surveys, has successfully executed another critical milestone project for regional renewable energy delivery.

Under a service agreement with an international developer, our survey specialists performed an extensive topographic survey 220 kV route designed to integrate output from the new Alpha wind park into the national power grid. The primary operational objective was to adapt and verify the altered alignment of the overhead transmission line corridor. Through rapid delivery of high-accuracy digital elevation models (DEM), the general design team modified master designs swiftly, eliminating spatial interference and avoiding costly construction reworks.

Project Objectives and Primary Engineering Tasks

The principal objective of the survey involved rapid instrumental examination of the modified right-of-way corridor following route adjustments. The field crew was tasked with securing coordinate benchmarks on-site, locating emerging surface and sub-surface barriers, and providing seamless transmission pathway calculations between the Alpha wind farm site and the Chopon-Ota nodal substation without disrupting existing land users or neighboring infrastructure.

Location and Geographic Landscape Conditions

The surveyed segment is situated in the Republic of Uzbekistan along an updated corridor connecting the Alpha wind power generating facility directly to the Chopon-Ota 220 kV substation. The survey area presented challenging terrain variations, crossing local secondary roadways, unpaved agricultural paths, irrigation irrigation canals, and active utility zones, requiring continuous multi-sensor quality control during field measurements.

Scope of Works: Topographic survey 220 kV route across 59 ha

To fulfill all engineering requirements within urgent schedules, the GEO PRO geodetic department completed the following operational phases:

  • Detailed topographic survey 220 kV route on modified corridor sections across a total coverage area of 59 hectares at 1:1000 and 1:2000 scales with 0.5-meter contour intervals.
  • Field tracing, staking, and horizontal-vertical coordinate anchoring of revised route bend angles and tangent points.
  • Comprehensive electronic locating, test-pitting verification, and digital map integration of all crossed underground pipelines, electrical conductors, and telecommunication links.
  • Expansion of reference geodetic baselines by establishing permanent bench markers tied strictly to the State Geodetic Network (SGN).
  • Generation of detailed longitudinal and transverse cross-sections along the adjusted alignment, mapping exact terrain elevations and safe ground clearances for overhead conductor spans.

Applied High-Precision Equipment and Geodetic Tools

Ensuring compliance with rigorous national measurement standards, our engineering teams deployed industrial-grade instrumentation:

  • Satellite GNSS Systems: Multi-frequency GNSS rover receivers running real-time kinematic (RTK) corrections from local base stations.
  • Optoelectronic Instruments: High-precision Leica TS07 total stations with sub-second angular precision and high-range reflectorless EDM.
  • Subsurface Detection Units: Electromagnetic Radiodetection locators and transmitters for locating hidden buried cables and metallic conduit systems.
  • Post-Processing Software: Validated software platforms including Credo-DAT, Credo Linear Surveys, and Autodesk Civil 3D for spatial data modeling and adjustment.

Compliance with Regulatory Standards (SHNK, KMK, GOST)

All geodetic surveys, analytical processing, and final design sheets were executed in compliance with Uzbekistan construction regulations and global practices:

  • SHNK 1.02.07-15: “Engineering surveys for construction”.
  • KMK 2.01.08-96: “Rules for geodetic works in construction”.
  • Safety and clearance guidelines outlined in the rules for overhead power line installations (PUE).
  • GOST 21.101-97: “Basic requirements for design and working documentation”.

Project Results and Operational Value for the Client

Upon finalization of calculations, the client (IP LLC “PEAK WIND ALPHA”) received a comprehensive technical engineering report containing vector cadastral layers, updated 3D digital terrain models, longitudinal profiling tables, and intersection logs. Completing this topographic survey 220 kV route ahead of schedule allowed the structural designers to optimize tower foundation depths, decrease steel and concrete expenditure, and secure swift project approvals from state regulatory authorities.

GIS Integration and Long-Term Power Grid Reliability

Delivered geospatial layers were pre-structured for immediate integration into the asset owner’s Geographic Information System (GIS). This dynamic data layer enables ongoing monitoring of right-of-way safety buffers, streamlines predictive asset maintenance, and guarantees long-term operational resilience for vital clean-energy transmission infrastructure.
